I have seen the video below proliferating on Facebook for quite some time. Lately, I was so busy, busy, busy, so at first, I was just ignoring the video. But since, many of my Facebook friends were sharing it and posting nasty comments, not to mention that I can see a snapshot of a baby held by a woman upside down, I've finally watched the video. And oh em gee!!! I was stunned, appalled, shocked!
Were you able to finish the video? Me, I tried my very best. But you know what, at the end of the video, something baffled me. Did the woman feel any guilt on what she’s doing? Was she really that heartless? Cruel? Who’s that baby? Who’s that woman who casually spins and swings the baby from side to side just like a pendulum? Was she his mother? Poor baby. But, at the end of the video, have you noticed that another woman kissed the baby and though I didn't understand what she said, it’s like she’s cheering and proud of the baby.
I was already expecting a lot of bad, bad comments. We, Filipinos, are quick to sympathize and take pity on such. But, who doesn’t? The video is just… horrible... disturbing. If anak mo ang ganyanin, ewan ko lang kung ano magawa mo. I took time to read the bad comments and my eye caught a single, different comment saying something like, “For your information that is called dynamic baby gymnastics. It is being practiced and legal in Russia.” Interesting.
I wanted more information so I quickly googled about this “dynamic baby gymnastics”. I’ve found out that dynamic baby gymnastics is a kind of exercise for babies. It is a type of baby yoga to promote extreme development. Russians believe in this practice to give babies a head start in life, according to BBC UK. It is indeed legal and widespread in Russia, though it is not part of a mainstream medicine. While it is permitted, it is practiced privately and is still highly controversial.
Watch this video of Lena Fokina performing baby dynamics yoga. She has been practicing this for 30-years. You can read about the exclusive interview with Lena Fokina on Dadwagon blog.
Okay, it is safe to assume that the woman on the first video might not really being ruthless but is just practicing what she believes is the best for baby.
But... but... but... The American Academy of Pediatrics, according to AOL News, warns that infant exercise may be dangerous for developing bones. On the other hand Fox News stated that "these prolonged and extreme jerking motions in a very small infant could potentially damage joints and even lead to shaken baby syndrome (SBS). SBS symptoms range from irritability to vomiting to seizures, and the long-term consequences of SBS can include learning and physical disabilities, cerebral palsy, behavior disorder, cognitive impairment and death."
