At What Age Should I Send My Child to School?

... 3 or 4 years old? I have been contemplating about it these past few days. I don’t know. It just crossed my mind and then I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Sam is already 21/2 years old. This coming July, he’ll be turning 3. So, I really should be thinking about it at this point in time.

Actually, my husband and I already had a short chat about it.

Daddae: Let us send Sam to school when he’s already 4. At 3, he’s still so young.
Mommae: I agree. Let him enjoy his toddler-hood first. Let’s just allow him to play, play, play and play.

That’s it. We’ve already decided that Sam we’ll be going to school next year. I remember my previous co-faculty member who shares the same idea. Also, as for me and Jodel, we want our kids (kids because we’re planning to have another baby... hehe...) just to enjoy schooling, not putting any pressure on their shoulders. Whether they become top notchers or not, it does not really matter. As long as they are learning and doing their best, we’ll be happy. That’s our principle.

But then, lately, I couldn’t stop asking myself – what’s really the perfect age for a child to go to school? Considering Sam’ development right now:

  • He has already mastered the alphabet! Yes, he can read every letter with no sweat whatsoever. It’s like he already knows how to read.
  • He can identify what word is for a particular letter.
  • He can count up to 20. Not yet perfect, he always forgets number 13. Lol but true. Yet he’s already proficient in counting from 1 to 10. He can even sing it.
  • He already knows a lot of shapes! Aside from the basic shapes, star and heart, he already knows the oblong and the crescent! What? Crescent? Hhmm, makes me wonder if he’s already familiar with hexagon. Lol, will ask him later.
  • He’s already capable of naming many colors! I’ve only been using “purple” when I was in college and he already knows it at 2!
  • He already knows a lot of vegetables, fruits, animals, body parts and so much more!

I guess that’s what books, an ipad and educational TV programs can do to a toddler! And endless counting when we go up and downstairs. And the posters on the wall. And the learning toys. And the constant Q and A portion about what is this and what is that...

Aside from this “academic know-how”, of course, there are still a lot of things that he can do. Everyday, he does not fail to amaze us! I am happy that he is growing well and I feel that I want to sustain all this knowledge he already has. But, I still have more questions:

  • Is he ready, mentally and socially?
  • At his age, is he going to enjoy it?
  • What school should I send him to?
  • Should I send him to a public or private school? Is the barangay kindergarten enough for the time-being?
  • Do I need to scout as early as now for the best school in town?
  • What’s the difference between nursery, kindergarten and preschool? Lol
  • What are the pros and cons of sending him to school at the age of 3 over sending him to school at 4?

And the last question probably is – Is Mommy ready? I think, I’m not! I’m not yet ready! For me, Sam is still my baby. The thought that he’s already going to school – it gives me a li’l bit of sad feeling ‘cause he’s no longer a baby. Actually, I'm freaking out! Whew! I also feel excited at the same time because I believe he’s going to have fun playing with other kids, travelling to and fro and meeting new friends. Unlike now that he doesn’t have any other playmates other than his yaya and me. Furthermore, am I already prepared for the major changes in our routines? Need to wake up early, prepare his baon, commute to and from the school, attend different activities, etc etc... Well, I still have four months to prepare and make some adjustments on my schedule. I need to plan carefully. This is my son. He deserves the best.

Haayy... Time flies so fast. Anak, I told you, don’t grow up too quickly. Mommy and Daddy might not catch up easily.

On my next post, I hope to answer all these questions I have in mind. For now, I'd like to ask you fellow mommies, at what age did you start sending your kids to school? Please consider leaving a comment or message for this first time mom.
