Huge Savings on my Electric Bill, Yey!

Our electric bill used to range from P3300 (~80USD) to P3900 (~95USD). For me, that's really big for an electric bill given that we're only few in the house. And that’s for two years!

I think the major culprit for this was the constant use of the 8 to 10-year old air con and the old ref.

And now that we have our new home, I needed to look for new appliances. I had to know what are the good ones. I had to choose from those appliances that do no drain the pocket. What I have gathered so far? Aside from the basics, I just want to mention three:

TIP 1:
I have learned that if an appliance is already old, like an average of 10 years, it is advisable to replace it, since it’s not efficient anymore. The appliances today, due to advancement of technology, are more energy efficient and have lesser operating expenses. Now, are you thinking of using second hand appliances? Aside from knowing if it’s still in good condition; don’t forget to know its age! But then again, for me it is advisable to buy a brand new one.

TIP 2:
Look for appliances with inverter technology. This new technology promises up to 40 to 50% savings versus a conventional one. The usual appliances with this technology are air cons and refrigerators.

TIP 3:
If you want to buy a ref, opt for the manual defrost rather than the automatic. (For big refrigerators, choose, again, those with inverter technology.)

And of course, I followed these 3 tips. I availed of 1.5HP LG inverter, split-type aircon and a Condura manual defrost refrigerator. Panasonic manual refrigerators have the highest energy efficiency rating (EER) though.

Since we moved to our new home and used the new appliances, I am now enjoying P1000 to P1800  (24 to 27USD) savings on my electric bill. That’s undeniably huge!

And to further satisfy my curiosity, I have downloaded Meralco's new MOVE App Suite. This suite consists of 6 apps:

  1. Meralco Office Directory – to find the nearest Meralco office in your area
  2. Bayad Center – to find out where you can conveniently pay your Meralco bill
  3. Meralco Appliance Calculator - to easily compute the amount of electricity an appliance consumes
  4. Bright Ideas – to learn better ways to use and save on electricity
  5. Power Maintenance Schedule- to stay up to date on the power maintenance schedule in your area
  6. E-Meralco bill –to view your latest bill even when you’re on the go

The MeralcO Virtual Engine (MOVE) is free and downloadable from the Apple AppStore, Google Play, and Blackberry App World.

Yep, like I said, I have downloaded the app on my Ipad:

And the Meralco appliance calculator is my favorite. It gives me an idea how much I am spending for a particular appliance.
