When I bought Sam's school supplies, I also added some colorful clays in the basket. I was just thinking of other activities for him. So, when he gets bored, he'll have something new to try on. I didn't know that time that playing with clay has tremendous benefits! Not only it is fun for kids, it also boosts child's creativity, widens his imagination, aids in physical development, helps to soothe him and relax and a whole lot more! Here, I'll list what a child can experience when playing with clay (according to Better Kid Care):
- Approaches and reactions to a new material (imagination, steps of involvement, temperament, feelings)
- Initiative, curiosity, and problem solving
- Technique and manipulation (what they do and what skills they use)
- Physical development (small and large motor skills)
- Ideas in representational forms (connecting ideas to meaning, symbolic demonstrations)
- Expression and communication (language, literacy, and social and emotional skills)
- Interactions and progressions over time (with other people, other materials)
Now, I'm very thankful I followed my "mother instincts"!
